March Urban Encounters took us all over the city! Partnering with Catholic Urban Project and a team from Southeast Missouri State University, this urban exploration took us through St. Agnes Church in the Virginia Park neighborhood, and the Fisher Body 21 plant on Piquette St. in New Center.

Our Bezalel Project students were able to publicly display their Man in the City statues at the Woodbridge Pub community garden this week.  Special thanks to artist John Sauve and Woodbridge Pub owner Jim Geary for making it possible.  The statues will make their next stop at Detroit’s own Scarab Club.  To see more photos of the day events and of the artists, please check out our facebook page photo stream: https://www.facebook.com/youthworksdetroit/photos_stream

Detroit has had its share of bad news, hard times, devastation, and failures.  Down near Michigan Central Station train depot, things have been stopped for a long time.  But for a city who’s time is now, and whose motto is “It will rise from the ashes,” maybe it is time to START - for life to make a way.

Our Detroit Community Outreach Lord’s Day dinner celebrations and prayer meetings remain anointed times of worship and fellowship with the world’s best brothers and sisters.  Best kept secret in Detroit?  How about the best time to encounter Jesus alive with his people in Detroit!

Bezalel Project - Brightmoor

A new year, and new beginnings, as Bezalel Project - Brightmoor got off the ground this past Friday.  It was a crazy and beautiful first day, as seven students from the Brightmoor neighborhood in Detroit gathered for games, snacks, a lesson in leadership from the bible, and movie making!  One quick movie filmed is hopefully coming soon to a home theater near you!  Thanks for your support, and thanks to God for always making all things new.

Cover of African American Spiritual Poor Wayfaring Stranger.  A teaser for an upcoming In Spirit and Truth CD to be released later this year.  Features former Detroit Summer Outreach interns Rob Gray (Lord Robert the Gray) and Will “Love” Cannon.  Also features Lizzy Shell, vocal artist from our DSO 2010 CD Overwhelmed.  Who knows?  Gap year 2014?

What will you do before you die...?

“Every man dies.  But not every man truly lives.” - Braveheart

A video of our own Ed Conlin about his work with the Capuchin Soup Kitchen in Detroit.

At the Bezalel Project Christmas party, God was celebrated, gifts were given, candy and prizes abounded, and bingo was played.  And A’janee was the victor (winning the first two times, and later a third just for good measure).  The pose at the top is her victory pose, and you can find her raising her hand to announce victory as well.  And in case there were any doubt - the proof is in the pudding…er - the M&M’s!

Charlotte Mason Community School Winter Recital

The 2012 Charlotte Mason Community School Winter Recital was an awesome event again this year.  Some of our youth, some of our children, and many relationships we have in Detroit are tied together through this school, and the recital and students are consistently amazing.  I personally am grateful to God for this school and all that it means to my family, and the difference it is making in the lives of the children of Detroit.  YouthWorks-Detroit is glad to serve alongside our brothers and sisters at CMCS. Merry Christmas!
